Technology Helps Us See You Better

At Dr. Black Optometrist, all our diagnostic and treatment technology is chosen with purpose. From assisting us in determining the most accurate and comfortable prescription for your vision to monitoring your eye health, our technology helps us deliver the care you expect and deserve.

We use innovative eye care technology such as OCT, HRT, and corneal topography devices, which allow our optometrists to evaluate your eye health. These devices provide in-depth, high-resolution images and scans that can show signs of eye disease before they’re visible to the naked eye.

Getting a Clear Picture with OCT Scans

Eye diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic eye diseases often do not show noticeable symptoms during the early stages. While regular eye exams are an essential preventive health measure to detect conditions before symptoms arise, diagnostic technology helps enhance the effectiveness of these exams.

We use OCT scans and retinal imaging tests to get a clear, in-depth picture of your eyes. OCT uses light waves to create an image of your retina’s layers (the back of your eye) and can be used to identify any changes to its structure. Retinal imaging shows a clear picture of the retina, optic nerve, and blood vessels in the eye.

Our Technology for Thorough Exams

As early detection is crucial for eye disease managment, we incorporate a variety of diagnostic tests in our comprehensive eye exams. We recommend certain tests, such as OCT, retinal imaging, and visual field testing, regularly as preventive care. Other scans may be recommended based on your concerns, risk factors, or vision correction preferences (e.g., wearing contact lenses or considering laser eye surgery).

Some tests are beyond the scope of our regular eye exams and may include an additional fee. As not every insurance plan covers these extra fees, we’ll advise you on your insurance plan, the cost of the test, and only recommend tests that are determined necessary for your eye health.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a noninvasive imaging technique that takes high-resolution, cross-sectional images of your retina and can measure your retinal thickness.

OCT scans are powerful tools to detect signs of retinal diseases like macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. They can also depict changes to other eye structures, such as the cornea, optic nerve, and blood vessels.

Retinal imaging is a critical test in monitoring general eye health. These high-resolution images show the retina, optic nerve, and blood vessels. As retinal imaging is performed in most comprehensive eye exams, it often provides the first signs of eye conditions and diseases.

Retinal images taken over time can be compared to show changes to the retina that may indicate signs of eye disease.

The Humphrey Visual Field test measures the visual field, which includes the entire area of vision that your eyes can see without moving. Your visual field includes your central and peripheral vision.

This test analyzes any blind spots in your visual field and can show changes to your peripheral vision through consecutive tests over time. These factors are essential for monitoring signs of eye diseases such as glaucoma and macular degeneration.

Additionally, the visual field test is an essential part of the Ministry of Transportation’s vision requirements for drivers in Ontario.

Corneal topography maps the curve of the cornea, the clear front part of the eye responsible for helping to focus light on your retina. The scan helps to monitor the health and changes to your cornea, especially for conditions such as keratoconus.

Corneal topography is also used to fit contact lenses and plan for corneal surgeries such as laser eye surgery.

HRT exams are used to monitor the health of the optic nerve. This noninvasive test uses a special laser to take 3D photographs of the optic nerve and surrounding retina. HRT exams are used for the diagnosis and management of glaucoma, which can damage the optic nerve.
