Make Your Eye Health a Priority
An eye exam doesn’t just check for your new prescription—it’s also key to maintaining your eye health now and in the future. At Dr. Black & Associates Optometrists, your healthy vision is our top priority.
We have been serving the Durham region for over 65 years with quality services and products. Our optometrists perform comprehensive eye exams for all ages in English, Portuguese, or Tamil.
Through our eye exams, we monitor changes to your vision, check for early signs of eye disease, and address your questions or concerns.

Request AppointmentComprehensive Eye Care Through Technology
In your eye exam, we go beyond asking basic questions like which is clearer, 1 or 2? Instead, we want to get to know you–what you love to do, how your vision affects your life, and any family history of eye disease that concerns you. Understanding you allows us to provide better eye care that supports your overall health.
While glasses are essential (in fact, we craft our lenses in-house), our attention to detail doesn’t stop there. We use key diagnostic technology, such as OCT and retinal imaging, which provide a clear picture of your eyes and their underlying structures. This enables us to detect eye disease before you notice symptoms, improving treatment options and outcomes.
What Happens in an Eye Exam?
When you come in for your eye exam, we’ll review your visual and general medical histories, test your visual acuity, check for refractive errors (which determine your prescription), and assess your ocular health. These tests may vary depending on your unique needs, but can include retinal imaging, testing eye pressure, and evaluating your eye movement and coordination.
Knowing that eye exams are essential for your ocular health may leave you wondering, “How often do I need an eye exam?” The Canadian Association of Optometrists (CAO) recommends that adults aged 20–64 have an eye exam at least every two years. For those 65 and above, annual exams are recommended. Children usually need an eye exam at least once a year while they’re in school.
While these guidelines provide a basis for low-risk individuals, we’ll let you know how often to schedule your eye exams based on any risk factors such as diabetes, family history, age, or other conditions.
Find the Cause of Gritty, Tired Eyes
If your eyes feel sore, gritty, or uncomfortable while wearing contacts, you may be dealing with dry eye. During your eye exam, we will test your tear film to find the cause. Once we determine the problem, we can help you find relief through our dry eye treatments.
While anyone can experience occasional dry eye due to environmental factors, if your eyes are bothering you regularly, we recommend booking a comprehensive eye exam.
Understanding & Reducing Eye Strain
Eye strain is a common condition that may cause dry eye, headaches, blurry vision, and neck or shoulder pain. Eye strain can be caused by long hours of screen time or wearing glasses or contacts with an outdated prescription. Presbyopia, a condition that occurs naturally when we age, making it harder to focus on objects at arm’s length, can also increase eye strain.
Besides keeping your prescription up-to-date, our specialty lenses (such as blue light filters or computer glasses) can help reduce eye strain from devices.
Precision-Crafted Lenses From Our In-House Lab
After your eye exam, we’ll help you choose new eyewear. Browse our selection of designer frames such as Prada, Ray-Ban, and Oakley, and take advantage of our in-house glasses lab.
Having the lab on-site lets us give you your new glasses quickly. We can also replace broken lenses or make other repairs in-house, so you don’t need to send your glasses away for repairs. If you have any questions, feel free to contact our clinic for more information.
Go Glasses-Free with Ortho-K
Orthokeratology, or ortho-k lenses, are a type of contact lens worn overnight to temporarily reshape your cornea, resulting in clear vision without glasses the next day.
Our optometrists can provide guidance during your appointment if ortho-k lenses are suitable for you. Ortho-k is also one of our favourite options for nearsighted kids, because it allows them to be glasses-free during the day while slowing the progression of their nearsightedness.
Ministry of Transportation (MTO) Visual Field Test
As part of the vision standards needed to drive in Ontario, you must take a horizontal visual field test. This test checks your peripheral vision to ensure you have a full field of view to drive safely.
To pass the visual field test, you must have a visual field of at least 120 continuous degrees along the horizontal meridian and 15 continuous degrees above and below fixation.
We provide all the required vision tests, including the automated visual field test, to comply with MTO requirements. Our eye doctors can complete the necessary documentation so you can apply for or renew your driver’s license. We perform MTO tests at the Glazier location only.
