What Is Ortho-k?

Orthokeratology, or ortho-k, is a treatment option used to correct nearsightedness. Sometimes referred to as overnight vision correction or corneal refractive therapy (CRT), ortho-k lenses temporarily reshape the cornea (the front part of your eye) to improve your vision.

Ortho-k contact lenses can be an alternative option if you are interested in improving your eyesight without laser eye surgery or trying to go glasses-free.

At Dr. Black Optometrist, we’re experienced in evaluating and fitting ortho-k lenses. Whether you are interested in improving your vision or looking for a myopia management treatment for your child, we’re happy to assist.

How Does Ortho-k Work?

Ortho-k works to improve vision problems caused by myopia (nearsightedness). Myopia occurs when an eye grows too long or the cornea is too steep. As we can’t change the length of your eye, ortho-k lenses target your cornea.

Ortho-k lenses work by gently flattening the curve of your cornea. They’re worn overnight and removed during the day, so you don’t need glasses or contact lenses.

If you currently wear ortho-k lenses, we recommend visiting us or your eye doctor every year to monitor your ocular health. Your ortho-k lenses should be replaced every year to avoid eye infections.

Can Ortho-k Work for You?

To determine if ortho-k is a good choice for you, we’ll perform an in-depth evaluation. This will include your eye health and family health histories, a variety of eye scans, including corneal topography, and a general eye health exam.

If we decide that ortho-k is a good option, we’ll proceed with fitting the lenses. Similar to other contact lenses, we’ll measure the shape of your cornea to fit the lenses comfortably. We’re happy to answer any questions you have during the evaluation.

Once your lenses are ready, we’ll instruct you on how to care for them. We’ll schedule a follow-up appointment to check how they’re feeling and see if you’re noticing the vision benefits we expect. If you have any questions or need to visit us sooner, don’t hesitate to contact us.

Ortho-k Lenses for Children

While ortho-k lenses are a great option for adults, did you know that they can also provide benefits for kids? Children with myopia are in a pivotal moment of their eye health and development.

Myopia management can help to slow the progression of their nearsightedness and reduce the risk of severe eye conditions later in life. Ortho-k is a powerful myopia control method that many kids prefer as it allows them the freedom to see without glasses or contacts during the day.

If your child has myopia and is ready to try contact lenses, ask us about ortho-k. We can evaluate their eyes and determine if it’s a good option.
